Use one universal Instant Messenger client

iChat is amazing, but sometimes, you want to IM your friends on Yahoo and MSN Messenger. Also, your work has installed corporate IM, and you're missing out on the office gossip.

What to do? Just install Adium.

It talks to just about any IM system, including enterprise systems like Lotus SameTime and Novell Groupwise.

Thumbs up Proteus is my choice for IM.

Proteus

Different strokes for different folks I always say. Proteus is my choice for one Instant Messenger that does it all. The above link is the main page but there is a Forum page as well. Registration is free. Really! Go through the ritual of buying it and it is priced at $0.00. You can read about that the forum too. Universal Binary is scheduled for the next beta. This is an active and well supported program that fells like a Mac when you use it.
