I can confirm that i tried the same hack on iPhoto '08 and not a problem and it seams that i'm not in the sea in any pics, all spot on!

Anyone know how to then map them all out to google earth?

Have you seen iPhotoToGoogleEarth? I wrote it for iPhoto 6 and have a beta version of it in testing for iPhoto 7 (part of iLife '08). Should be out within a week.
