MBP Engraving - 05-11-2006, 04:40 PM

I've been looking at having my MBP engraved with my name and a small design. The only place I can seem to find is www.etchamac.com, but I don't really want to mail a $2000 computer to Arizona.

Any ideas?

I'm sure you've heard of colorware, but I just checked and they do more than color now, they also do corporate branding.

The the thing though, the keyword is "corporate", I dunno if they do one-offs. But since you're doing a logo, maybe you can tell 'em you're testing out the service.

However, that also involves sending out your MBP, but at least Colorware has been around a while and has a more established reputation.

Also, it appears that the etchamac folks ship out replacement tops. Right now, they only list replacement tops for 15" PB, maybe you can ask them if they now support MBPs.

And what about sending out the existing top instead of the whole laptop? I dunno how much longer the leaked MBP Service Manual will be available on the web now that Apple Legal is chasing after the sites, but I googled "macbook pro service manual" and it was still there. With the manual, at least you can take out the display housing without fear of missing something.

Lastly, you may want to pay a visit to your local FastSigns franchise. I once had my electric scooter pimped out with some custom graphics and it didn't really cost that much. It was a sticker, though, and not an engraving.

Hope this helps!

Have you checked out schtickers.com? They do custom removable decals too.

I just ordered one. I'll let you know how it works out...

I'm not sure I'm too into the schtickers thing, since it is removable... part of the allure of having an engraved macbook is the slight sense of security it would offer, as well as the nifty appearance. I don't really want to hide the beautiful MacBook look.

Hey guys! I stumbled on this thread yesterday and got picqued.
I contacted the etchamac.com guys and they said they now do MBPs!

Joel,

We are currently etching the MacBook Pro’s. You can either send us your lid (assuming it is not warped or bent, as this will cause focus issues and subsequent banding). Another option is purchasing a replacement lid for $49.00 (eliminating the need to mail us your lid, and allowing you to retain your original). Below is a link to our gallery, and if you do not find an image you would like to use, you could certainly email us a vector file of anything you would like us to etch, and we will create a moch-up for you, as well as a quote. Thank you for your inquiry and we hope to etch something for you in the very near future. Please contact us with any further questions or concerns.

Woot!!

I brought to their attention that there are two lids per the leaked MBP service manual (just google "macbook service manual") depending on the LCD used. Brian said I just need to send the ser no to them and they can figure out which lid to order.

Double woot!!!

I'm still hesitating to order a lid though.... I'm leaning going the schtickers way. Jeff, what about you? If you order a lid, please do let us know, okiedoks?

Colorware
This give you all any ideals. These people have been at this for a couple of years and people at other forums have been pleased with their work. What ya think?

Just got my lapschticker last night! I got the Matrix skin and they really give your laptop that extra ooommmppphhh.

My only complaint is that the default size for 15" Notebooks (Size B) is a tad large for the MBP. There's a bit of an overhang coz of the curvature of the MBP lid.

I know I can trim it, but it won't be as nice, especially with the rounded corners.

Overall, I'd say they're a good deal and would recommend it. Its a cheap way to personalize your MBP.

And since they're removable, I can easily go the the default MBP look when I go to client sites.
