The MacBook has arrived! - 05-16-2006, 09:21 AM

Without much fanfare, Apple "stealth-launched" the MacBook on their website.
Even though its $100 more expensive than the previous generation, the MacBook has generous specs:
  • Intel Core Duo 1.83/2.0 Ghz
  • Magsafe connector
  • 13.3" screens that are 80% brighter than the previous generation
  • built-in iSight
  • FrontRow with Apple Remote
  • on top of a larger HD and more memory
So generous in fact, that Apple silently bumped the MBP's specs as well. The low-end 15" 1.83Ghz to 2.0Ghz, and the 15" 2.0 to 2.16Ghz. The 17" remains at 2.16Ghz.

With the launch well ahead of the back-to-school buying season, Apple is now well poised to grab a respectable chunk of the education market.

Darn!!! Talk about planned obsolescence! My 2 month old MBP 1.83 Ghz is already discontinued

Oh well.... I can't really blame Apple. It was actually very brave of them to spec the MacBook so close to the MBP.

It would be nice though if they can throw us 1.83Ghz MBP owners a bone - a free copy of iWork or some iTunes gift certificates, perhaps?
