MacBook's vent blocked - 05-25-2006, 03:15 PM

MacBook's vent blocked
This is either the most self-explanatory observation or something Apple's production process has overlooked. In the first case I hope you forgive me

Just as many other MacBooks, mine got really hot and that got me a bit concerned. This is my first Apple laptop and I take a lot of pleasure in discovering new things about it. After playing around with it I found that the vent under the screen is covered with a piece of laminate. I briefly checked the manual and it doesn't mention anything about it. It's very hard to get to it as the gap between the screen and the base is very tight. However, I was able to remove it and surprise... my fans went quiet. The laminate covers the whole vent so no air gets out at all.

It's possible that the company that manufacturers the case for the MacBook puts the laminate there to prevent dust entering the case. However, if this is the case then Maintek Computers in Suzou, China, who assemles the units, doesn't take it off. I can't imagine this is something that a consumer is supposed to do.

Even though the new firmware update prevents me from checking the temperature I am quite sure that my MacBook is running a lot cooler. The fans don't kick in all the time anymore.

I hope Apple starts taking these things out during production... x.x

mine didnt have the plastic, but it still gets warm. At the moment, its at 62 C after having a few apps open and ripping a CD in iTunes, and its on an iCurve. I think the CoreDuos are just hot chips.

MacBook may run warm because rear vent is blocked

Quote:
Some MacBooks may have left the factory with a thin piece of clear plastic covering the rear vent. This is used in the factory to prevent dust from getting into your computer. If your MacBook has the plastic still over the vent, simply remove and discard it.
Any questions?
