Whats up with Linux booting on MacTels? - 03-29-2006, 03:50 AM

Been following the MacTel Linux scene and been pretty stoked by all the devts.

At first, I was kinda dissapointed at the pace of devt of the Linux guys compared to the onmac.net folks. I fully expected that a LiveCD that would allow people to boot Linux on their Macs without major surgery would be up and running relatively quickly. And that was the case when Linux booting on MacTels were announced to the world Feb 16 almost a full month before the XP on Mac contest was won.

However, the XP on Mac community has leapfrogged ahead of the Linux folks.

IMHO, this is because the Linux on Mac community hasn't been getting the same press coverage as the Windows folks and the mactel-linux.org and osxbook.com sites have not been as busy or as "user-friendly" as the onmac.net site.

Hopefully, your new site is more OS-agnostic and will be common ground for all MacTellians...

Macinlinux,
Don't worry... that's our plan - to be the clearinghouse for all sorts of MacTel info, Linux included.

The very fact that we have a forum for Linux tips our hand.

Right now, the MTC team is marshalling together all kinds of resources on the web, deciphering it, and putting it in a format that a regular computer user can understand.

Just keep checking in, actually, one of the first articles we're targetting to put up is a walk-thru on triple-booting - OS X, Windows XP Pro, and Ubuntu Linux.

We should have it up within a week.

Keep mactelling....

MacinLinux!
You now have several options to do Linux on the Mac! You can either install Boot Camp, which now allows you to boot from various Linux LiveCDs (Knoppix and Ubuntu come to mind) or you can install Parallel's Workstation 2.1.
